Following the recent Cogent network incident, we conducted an additional review of our own network infrastructure and decided to move forward with the next stage of upgrades to improve capacity, bandwidth, and overall service stability.
A LAX-BGP network cutover is scheduled for September 3 at 3:30 PM Los Angeles time (6:30 PM Toronto time). The primary purpose of this work is to prepare the network for upcoming capacity and bandwidth upgrades. VPS IP addresses and data will not be changed.
A 10-minute maintenance window is reserved, while actual network impact is expected to be approximately 5 minutes and no longer than 10 minutes. Brief connectivity loss or connection resets may occur during the cutover.
After the cutover, we will continue upgrading network capacity, available bandwidth, and overall infrastructure resilience. Under the current plan, the next bandwidth upgrade is expected to be completed no later than the end of October, with most existing plans receiving approximately twice their current bandwidth and generally reaching between 1 and 2 Gbps.
Current Lite 500 Mbps: expected to increase to 1 Gbps
Current Ultra 1 Gbps: expected to increase to 2 Gbps
Final speeds for Basic, Pro, and some legacy plans will depend on their existing configurations and will be announced before the upgrade.
This work will improve the capacity, availability, and stability of the infrastructure within our control. However, large-scale upstream incidents such as a direct Cogent backbone fiber cut can affect many Cogent customers throughout the Los Angeles region and cannot be completely prevented by an individual provider, even after this upgrade. In such cases, we will continue coordinating closely with the carrier and keeping customers informed.
